It seems Muncy is a perfect example of a player who worked hard to overcome the difficult times that generated his release from the Athletics. ![]() From doubt to confidence is a rather rocky road to travel. Self confidence is a hidden ingredient that transforms players. But then again, Muncy has only 3.027 years of service time in the major leagues, making his contract fair and understandable. Considering that Muncy has hit 70 home runs and driven in 177 runs in the past two years, his average annual contract value of $8.666M is a relative bargain for Los Angeles. Muncy has signed a three-year contract that will pay him $26M through the 2022 season. He hunts good pitches to hit, and he hits them. Of all his hitting qualities, it is the plate discipline this writer saw back in 2013 that helps make Muncy the hitter he is today. Add that to his 122 hits, and it helped him achieve an on-base percentage of. Last year, Muncy walked 90 times in his 589 plate appearances. Teammate Bellinger was first in baseball with a 9.1 WAR.įor the past two seasons, Muncy has been in the top ten MLB players in accepting bases on balls. Muncy compiled a 5.7 WAR (Wins Above Replacement) for the Dodgers last season, an outstanding accomplishment, and one that was 10th in all of baseball. He played in the 2019 postseason, hitting three home runs in 23 plate appearances. He suffered a small fracture, but he was able to return to the team. In late August last season, Muncy was hit on the wrist by Padres pitcher Matt Strahm. Having Muncy at first base also allows Cody Bellinger, also a first baseman, to remain in the outfield, where Bellinger has thrived. In addition to adding power to the lineup, he’s an excellent defensive insurance policy. However, if there is any issue with Lux playing second or with Corey Seager at third base, Muncy can shift over to either of those positions with little difficulty. The addition of Gavin Lux to their everyday lineup may move Muncy more permanently to his traditional first base role. He isn’t confined to playing just one place on defense, which helps the club extend and expand rosters with players capable of playing multiple positions. Last year he drove in 90 runs while playing defensively at first base, second base and third base. Muncy has hit 35 home runs in each of the past two seasons. His revival and breakthrough with the Dodgers is fairly remarkable. In late April following his release, Muncy was offered a new baseball life, as he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Muncy played his way off the Athletics big league club by hitting. Muncy made it to the parent Athletics club in 2015. Regardless of his poor power showing in Arizona, Muncy showed he was a natural, pure hitter. Interestingly, in the Fall League after that season, he failed to hit a home run in 60 plate appearances.
